Paul McGinley's Golf Swing on the Explanar

Paul McGinley Golf Swing – Before Explanar
At the last practice day for the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond at around midday Paul met Luther on the practice ground. At this time he was in a slump of form having missed the cut in 3 of the last 4 events; both he and his caddy, Darren, reported that all Paul’s bad shot were pulls – low and left.
Luther quickly identified that Paul had 3 subtle characteristics:
- Paul at 5’7” had long arms.
- His chin was down at address
- His takeaway move was too flat and beneath his Biomechanical Optimum swing plane.
Consequently, Paul’s forearms rolled excessively which also stopped the wrists hinging correctly throughout the swing.

Paul McGinley Golf Swing – After Explanar
All that was needed was Luther to set the Explanar halfway between where Paul’s swing was and where it should ideally be; this ensured that the change was not too dramatic on the eve of a huge tournament. For an hour Paul alternated between the Explanar and hitting shots; with minimal mental change he strongly felt happier about his striking. Mc Ginley made the cut at a comfortable 4 under par; Darren reported that Paul had not hit one shot low and left in 36 holes.
The very next week Paul travelled to The Open at Carnoustie and asked for an Explanar to be installed at his accommodation for use during The Open. The ‘after’ video of Paul working on the Explanar shows him swinging freely on a slightly more upright plane. Rather than his hands and arms being below his Optimum Biomechanical Swing Plane, they are now distinctly in plane as he swings the weighted Power Roller back and forth.
These subtle, yet hugely vital improvements were implemented and absorbed by Paul in a very short space of time, right in the heart of his tournament schedule.
Rather than getting bogged down in the theory of a complex swing change, he now reported that he had the clearest and simplest feeling of “dropping” the club perfectly on the back of the ball at impact. Paul intimated that this was the feeling he always had when playing his best; he was delighted with the quickness of his improvement. His great form continued, leading to his highest best finish in The Open for 12 years; this run continued and gained him qualification for the U.S. P.G.A. Championship. After another strong showing Paul declined the privilege of Vice-Captain to Nick Faldo at the Ryder Cup; He now feels able to launch a serious challenge to earn a place in the team.
Paul took delivery of an Explanar Professional System at his home in the UK and this is installed in his gymnasium. Along with Luther Blacklock’s input, Paul has made the Explanar a vital part of his fitness regime. Both Paul and Luther are delighted with the progress Paul has made and are in buoyant mood for the future.
